Common Winter Roof Problems

The icy chill of winter can wreak havoc on your roof. As a homeowner, any roofing problems can cause a major headache- especially winter ones. Here are the three most common problems roofs experience in the winter time.

Clogged Gutters
During the winter, clogged gutters are one of the top causes of roof problems during the colder months. Debris such as leaves, sticks, and dirt can stop water from flowing correctly from your house. If not taken care of, clogged gutters can lead to water damage on your roof because the water will begin to pool in areas. Prevent this problem by periodically inspecting and cleaning your gutters.

Ice Dams
This is a common roof problem for many homeowners. Ice dams are essentially an accumulation of water and ice under the shingles. When the snow on the roof starts to melt and flows downward then begins to refreeze is when the issue arises. The water that is caught behind the ice dam can end up seeping into the small cracks and joints in the roof. Unfortunately, this can cause some severe structural damage. How to avoid ice dams? Make sure your roof has an efficient ventilation system, ensure all cracks are sealed and the excess ice is removed from the roof.

Overhanging Tree Branches
Trees make your yard beautiful but if the branches are too close to your roof- problems can ensue. Overhanging tree limbs can pose a problem to your roof because they can scrape the surface of your roof which damages the roofs protective top layer. Also, branches that are too close to your roof could cause potential damage to the shingles as well as mold growth. To prevent this, be sure to prune the branches of your tree regularly.
