Roof storm damage can stem from airborne debris traveling at high speeds, hail, and moisture damage. The summer months can bring heavy rain and humid conditions that can lead to furious storms that can lead to property damage. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that there are more than 1.2 million Americans that live in at-risk coastal regions. These are communities that will typically have to repair their roofs regularly. However, roof storm damage can occur anywhere.
3 Signs of Summer Storm Damage on Your Roof
1. Dents and Impressions on Your Roof. If the roof is accessible to you and you feel comfortable doing so, carefully inspect the roof for physical damage. Check the metal parts of your roof for signs of impact. Any structure made with metals will have dents and dings if they’ve been affected by severe weather. Large dents can also be a sign of hail.
2. Your Shingles Have Lifted. Shingles that are in the yard or that have become misplaced are undeniable signs of trouble, with lifted shingles exposing the felt paper that is applied to the wood sheathing, which does not fare well with the elements. Lifted shingles are akin to unzipping a jacket – the jacket may not be off entirely, but with incoming rain and winds, you won’t have the same level of protection. Water will blow underneath the exposed shingles, and you now have moisture damage.
3. There Is a Loss of Granules From the Actual Shingles. Asphalt shingles are made of small granules that are visible to the naked eye. These are small and inconspicuous but are still essential to protect the surface from UV rays and inclement weather. If there is a substantial number of granules pooled in your downspout or scattered around the outside perimeter of your property, then they may need to be replaced since they have lost their effectiveness.
